Beware of nice looking ladies..

Les Mees is a French village situated in the department of the Alpes de Haute Provence, near Digne-Les-Bains.

This area is known for its very peculiar geological rock formations, called "Les Penitents".

The name is inspired on the conic shape of the rocks, next to the village, which evokes a groups of monks wearing long pointed cowls (like those worn by the Capuchin monks).

The Legend says that this group of monks was transformed to stone by the devil after having looked at a beautiful woman (without even having been able to touch, those poor monks..!!).

Anyway, the official story tells us that the shape is mainly the result of erosion on the rocky surface. It's irregularity in terms of cohesion provokes the special shape of the rocks. The rocky surface ("substrate") is called the "Formation of Valensole", a conglomerat formed by an accumulation of subalpine residus between the end of the Miocene and the beginning of the Pliocene, and is several meters thick.

The rock formation is about one 1 kilometer long and atteins a height of 114 mètres.

Marmota Marmota

These are pictures of the Alpine Marmot (Marmota Marmota), I discovered in the French Alpes, at White Lake ("Lac Blanc", near Chamonyx).

Marmots are ground-living rodents related to the squirrel family and closely related to the ground squirrel, prairie dog, and chipmunk. Marmots are found in Eurasia and North America and inhabit plains or open country in mountainous regions. They hibernate during the winter and mate immediately thereafter. Active during the day, they feed chiefly on grasses and other green plants. Marmots have stout bodies, rounded ears, powerful digging claws and can sit upright.

The Alpine marmot lives below the snow level in the Alps.

Marmots are classified in the phylum Chordata , subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family Sciuridae.

Lou, the mexican star

Lou dancing on mexican music on the occasion of the last day of the summer holidays in Praz-sur-Arly. Usually quite shy, she was in her element that day. Happy and cheerful, Lou likes to dance in general.

Wild carabidae

This beetle (family Carabidae), encoutered during a hiking walk in the French Alpes was quite stressed out when I met him.

Without moving its body for minutes, it was waving its antennes in excitement to find out what was happening.

Relaxted man, I just take a picture.
